Why Philly Summers Are Heating Up

Philly’s average summer temperatures have gotten hotter, according to a new report from research group Climate Central. In 2022, average temperatures in Philly were 79.3 degrees, compared to 75.1 in 1970, making last year’s temperatures the second-highest average since that year.

Many major forecast services have predicted that temperatures will be above-average in the Philly region this summer. Meteorologists expect high heat as a result of a nearly snowless winter and a very dry spring. But don't worry, it’s unlikely to get as hot as last summer, which was one of Philly’s warmest on record 🌡️

Fortunately, all 61 of the city’s public pools are set to open this season, so you will have plenty of spots to stay cool. The city aggressively campaigned to recruit enough lifeguards to ensure all the pools could open this summer 🛟

Despite the blistering heat last year, the city wasn't able to open all of its pools due to staffing issues. Hear from a retired grandma-turned-Philly lifeguard about this year’s fight to keep pools open. [City Cast Philly 🎧]
