Eastern State Penitentiary opened in 1829 and was considered the first true correctional facility in America, with Charles Dickens referring to its early-on solitary confinement practices as “cruel and wrong.” Before closing in 1971, the penitentiary housed thousands of inmates and saw countless brutalities, making it a place many consider haunted.
