Shout out to Hey Philly readers Lucinda L. and Sandy S. for suggesting Germantown for this week’s “Get To Know” segment.

Germantown, located in Northwest Philly, is one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods. It’s often referred to as “Freedom’s Backyard,” due to the many acts of resistance that occurred there, like the Germantown Quaker Petition Against Slavery.

Aside from its many historical attractions, Germantown has some charming spots worth checking out. Here are my suggestions:

A place to chill: If you’re a coffee aficionado or an avid book reader, you’ll love Uncle Bobbie’s Coffee & Books on 5445 Germantown Ave. Indulge in coffee, sweet potato pie, vegan cookies, and gourmet teas. The specially curated bookshelves tell the stories of Black culture and activism.

Get artsy: Support local artists at the nonprofit alternative art space, iMpeRFeCt Gallery on 5539 Germantown Ave. Catch poetry readings, film festivals, visual art exhibitions, interactive workshops, and more.

Embrace nature: Explore a green oasis at Vernon Park on 5800 Germantown Ave. The 8-acre space contains an array of historical buildings and monuments, as well as a playground, adult fitness equipment, gardens, and picnic spaces.

Bottoms up: Enjoy award-winning beers and live entertainment from Attic Brewing Company on 137 Berkley Street. The brewery hosts frequent events like sports watch parties, comedy shows, and beer and music festivals.

Which neighborhood should I cover next?
