Fitler Square encompasses Rittenhouse Square, Devil’s Pocket, and Grays Ferry. It’s bounded by the Schuylkill River and is situated between Locust and South Streets.

It’s one of the most residential areas in Center City and its cobblestone streets are lined with gourmet eateries, cafes, bistros and more. There’s also plenty of outdoor spaces which enhances this neighborhood’s tight-knit community vibe.

History: Fitler Square is named after Edwin Henry Fitler, who was elected mayor of Philadelphia in 1887 and served one term. Fitler was well-respected and the neighborhood was named in his honor shortly after his death in 1896.

What to eat: If you want a luxurious experience, check out Friday Saturday Sunday on south 21st Street. In its intimate dining room upstairs, Chef Chad Williams delights guests with a decadent eight course tasting menu. Try the honeynut squash or the grilled quail.

What to do: The Comcast Technology Center has plenty to explore, including several large art installations. My favorite is by Jenny Holzer, because it features a series of words and phrases in constant motion that run on the lobby ceiling. It’s mesmerizing!
