Located just past Fairmount Park in the northwest corner of Philly, Roxborough brings plenty of shopping, dining, and outdoor activities.

Back in the late 1600s, our main man William Penn sold over 4,200 acresof land in Roxborough to 11 individuals. The area was originally called Manatawna, referring to the Lenni Lenape people who once occupied the land.

Deborah Del Collo, an archivist for the Roxborough, Manayunk, and Wissahickon Historical Society, estimates that the translation of Manatawna in English is “an open road from our creator.”

The name didn’t officially change until 1707. Within 50 years, the first 11 parcels were divided and resold to more people, and Roxborough quickly developed.

When you’re in town, you have to check out an infamous cheesesteak spot (of course).

Dalessandro’s is always packed and is easily one of the best places to get a cheesesteak in the city. One of the coolest things about Dalessandro’s is that you can order gourmet sodas, domestic, and imported beers. Get this: There are over 20 options just for craft beer!

And if you’re in the mood for a classic nature walk, look no further than Wissahickon Park. It’s the perfect place to get some steps in, clear your mind, and even go bird watching.
