Will Pennsylvania Automatically Return Unclaimed Cash?

Posted on May 25, 2023   |   Updated on September 30, 2025

Pennsylvania’s treasurer Stacy Garrity wants to send you your unclaimed money, using a system that twelve other states have already implemented, according to Spotlight PA.

Pennsylvania is currently holding on to more than $4 billion in unclaimed money, including checks that were never cashed, unused gift cards, and tax refunds sent to the wrong address.

But the current system for reclaiming that cash puts the burden on the individual, and many people don't know that they have money to claim in the first place.

Garrity proposed legislation that would allow the state to automatically return money to people with no action needed on their part.
