Pride Month, an annual celebration of historic gay rights protests in New York City, begins this week. But did you know that Philly played an important role in sparking the ongoing LGBTQ rights movement?

In late February 1979, about 300 LGBT activists from across the U.S gathered at a historic Quaker meeting house in Old City for the “Philadelphia Conference.” There, the activists organized the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, the first of its kind.

The march, which took place in October, brought around 100,000 protesters to the nation’s capital and helped launch the national movement for lesbian and gay equality and freedom 🏳️‍🌈
