It’s better to use what you have before buying something new. But if you’re looking to stock up on household goods, there are local stores dedicated to providing plastic-free and refillable products. You can find items such as bulk soaps and detergents, shampoo bars, and beeswax wraps at 

 in Mt. Airy. Co-ops will also let you buy in bulk with reusable containers. These shops source local and organic products to avoid excessive packaging. Some local options include

If you’re not committing to a 100% plastic-free month, you can still dispose of your remaining plastics responsibly. The 2-1-5 Method is a general rule of thumb to remember

Summer is practically here, which means Philadelphians are gearing up to head to their neighborhood pool or 

 for a beach day. While swimming is one of the activities most synonymous with summer, not everyone can participate. According to the CDC, 

more than half of American adults have never taken a swimming lesson

, putting themselves at higher risk of drowning. It’s not just adults in danger; drowning is the number one cause of death for children under the age of four.

Ready to get in the water? Here’s where you can learn to swim in and near the city.

Aspiring swimmers of all ages have the option of visiting either of 

’s locations in Center City or South Philly. Parents can join their baby or toddler in the pool for the 

 and practice their skills during open swim. Young swimmers above the age of three can participate in weekly private and group swim lessons. During the summer, kids between the ages of six and 12 can attend a

How much food waste do you generate at home? Even if it doesn’t feel like a lot, waste in a big city can add up. In 2019, the city estimated that Philadelphia 

 each year. Composting is one way to help reduce the waste we send to our landfills.

The benefits go beyond having less trash to haul out each week.

What to do with your compost depends on the season you’re working in. The fall is a good time to start your compost
