What Philly's Talking About

When Sharing Drugs Leads to Overdose, Should Prison Follow?

Hundreds of people have been sentenced to state prison for supplying drugs that led to fatal overdoses. This targets fellow drug users rather than high-level dealers, critics say. But the state Supreme Court doesn’t see it that way, declining to give legal protections to those “co-users.” [Spotlight PA]

Sheriff's Scandals Don't Interest City Council

There are renewed calls to abolish the Sheriff’s Office after the revelation that the office had been sitting on $20 million owed to the city. But City Council members continue to refuse to criticize Sheriff Rochelle Bilal and won’t even consider a proposal to abolish the scandal-plagued office. The Inquirer polled council members on the sheriff — here’s what they said. [🔒 The Inquirer]

Enslaved Potter’s Family Wants Piece Back from the PMA

David Drake was an enslaved potter whose works include an 83-pound stoneware jar that found its way to the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s exhibition “A Nation of Artists.” Drake’s descendants have asked the museum to return the pot to a trust formed to reinstate Drake’s work to his family. The lawyer working with the trust says the museum has so far been “noncommittal.” [Philadelphia Museum of Art / Artforum]

New Book Highlights 40 Years of Change

“Philadelphia in Color 1950-1990,” by the team at Hidden City Philadelphia, is the first color photography collection from that era in Philly. Host Trenae Nuri and executive producer Matt Katz discuss what’s special about this collection — the riverfront looked like that? we’ve been climbing poles for how long? — in today’s pod. A home in Germantown — dubbed Upsala — is listed on Zillow for $945,000, but you have to be down with an annual “re-enactment of portions of the Battle of Germantown” on your front lawn. Also: There’s nine bedrooms but just one bathroom?? [Zillow / X]

‘No Kings’ Meets ‘Get Out The Vote’

This weekend more than 30 No Kings rallies are planned in the Philly region to encourage voting in the midterms. Organizers say attendees will be encouraged to check their registration, learn voting rights, and find out how to vote early. Monday is the last day to register to vote for this election. [WHYY]
