If you’re a novice, there are multiple studios in the city to learn how to dance. (Photo by Ardian Lumi on Unsplash)

It’s time to bust out those dancing shoes! Whether you have two left feet or need to brush up those skills, there are opportunities around Philly to learn how to move. Here are some of our favorites.

Bomba Plena Cultural Center | 400 E. Allegheny Ave.

Los Bomberos de la Calle have been preserving Puerto Rican culture through performances with the traditional percussion instruments, “bomba” and “plena.” In January, the group moved into their new community space in Kensington to expand programming related to music and dance.

Concierge Ballroom | 30 S. 7th St.

Interested in learning ballroom dancing? How about doing the hustle? Concierge Ballroom offers group and private lessons in almost 20 styles of dancing. While the space was created out of a love of partner dancing, singles are always welcome.

Jazz Attack | 1906 Rittenhouse Square

Ya like jazz? Learn how to Lindy Hop and swing dance with Jazz Attack. The group meets every Thursday to learn Black vernacular jazz dances, as well as their cultural history. Each event begins with drop-in beginner lessons.

Philly Dance Share | 1316 S. 9th St.

Philly Dance Share is a volunteer-run movement collective inside the CHI Movement Arts Dance Center in South Philly. Classes take place every Tuesday and Thursday and are pay-what-you-wish. Dancers of all skill levels are invited to participate.

Society Hill Dance | 1919 E. Passyunk Ave.

Pay only $20 to swing by Society Hill Dance’s beginner lessons on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. If you just want to scope the place out, the studio offers one free dance consultation. They also offer wedding dance lessons to get you ready for your big day.

Urban Movement Arts | 2100 Chestnut St. and 812 Chestnut St.

Urban Movement Arts’ offerings vary between both locations. If you stop by the original location at 2100 Chestnut St., you can take lessons in contemporary Black American folkloric dance, Latin American Dance, and somatic practices. The new location at 821 Chestnut St. features dance, martial arts, and acrobatics all in one space.
