After indulging in all of the Thanksgiving dishes, it could only mean one thing … holiday season is officially in full swing. When the temperatures dip and the air grows crisp, it’s time to embrace the joys of winter — from festive light displays to ice skating in the middle of the city. Here are just some ways to make the most of December in Philadelphia:
👪 Family Fun in Philly
The Holiday Garden Railway at the Morris Arboretum & Gardens is a must-see for families this month. This enchanting display features model trains weaving through miniature landscapes. Both daytime and evening shows offer a magical experience. For other festive light displays, head up to Norristown to Elmwood Park Zoo, where you can enjoy illuminated animals and live performances until Dec. 30.
Back in Center City, South Street hosts holiday events beginning at noon on Dec. 2 — a tree lighting ceremony, a visit from Santa, and the Mrs. Claus Holiday Market. And on Dec. 11 at 4:45 p.m., Headhouse Shambles will hold a menorah lighting.
🎄 Celebrate Christmas Around Philly
Experience a winter wonderland at A Longwood Christmas at Longwood Gardens, where both indoor and outdoor exhibits are decorated for the season. The exhibit will run until Jan. 12, so you have plenty of time to soak in the beauty of seasonal decor. And don’t miss the Christmas Village in Center City — this charming, European-style market is full of various gifts, goodies, and rides.
🕎 Happy Hanukkah
Various menorah lightings mark the eight nights of Hanukkah, including one at the Betsy Ross House in Old City on Dec. 30 from 4 to 4:30 p.m.
For a more adult Hanukkah activity, head to Khyber Pass Pub on Dec. 16 at 8 p.m. for a screening of Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights. Enjoy the movie with latkes and vodka. This event is for those 21 or over and you can purchase tickets online.
On Dec. 15, the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History will host Shine a Light Family Day from 3 to 5 p.m. Bring the kids for an afternoon of storytelling and crafts. On Christmas Day, the museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for various activities, including an interactive concert and a percussion workshop.
🩰 Performances To See This Month
The best way to spread Christmas cheer is by singing loud for all to hear … or at least listening to some singing! You can catch ELF The Broadway Musical at the Walnut Street Theatre. With performances until Dec. 29, you have the whole month to catch a performance. And is it really the holiday season if you don’t see The Nutcracker? The Kimmel Center will have performances throughout December — perfect for the whole family or a date night.
