Your Guide to September in Philly

00:00:00

It’s almost September, which means summer is drawing to a close, and we’re getting closer to (hopefully) being able to feel a little chill in the air. In Philadelphia, September is packed with tons of stuff to do. Let’s get into some of it ⬇️

🍂 Switch Into Fall Mode

Sure, summer technically doesn’t end until Sept. 22 … but who’s to say we can’t embrace the spirit of autumn earlier? It’s time for sipping some caffeinated pumpkin spice on the way to work, making your yearly trip to Linvilla Orchards in Delco, and taking a day trip out to South Jersey for Bellview Winery’s annual Fall Fest on Sept. 28 and 29.

👟 Get Out Your Walking Shoes!

For a peaceful day out in nature, bring the whole family to a Grandparents Day hike through the Wissahickon, organized by the group Hike+Heal. Scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 8 from 1 to 3 p.m., it’s completely free.

If you’re down for a mix of indoor and outdoor walking, why not take yourself on a free museum tour of Old City on a crisp fall day? From the Museum for Art in Wood to the American Philosophical Society, there are plenty of $0 or pay-what-you-wish options within just a few blocks of each other.

Or, spend some time out and about in Center City. Check out Open Streets: West Walnut on one of four Sundays in September, which will close a stretch of Walnut and a stretch of 18th near Rittenhouse Square from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to make way for a pedestrian-only shopping, dining, and entertainment experience. If you go Sept. 8 or 15, you can also snag some Center City District Restaurant Week deals while you’re in the area.

🎭 Enjoy a Night at the Theater

The entertainment opportunities this month are pretty much endless, and we’ve got the Philadelphia Fringe Festival to thank for it. Running from Sept. 5 through 29, Fringe brings hundreds of creative, contemporary theatrical performances and events to the city. It can be a lot to take in — this handy guide from Billy Penn can help you figure out where to start.

Fringe isn’t your only option for live performances, though. Les Misérables is on at the Academy of Music until Sept. 8, “POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying To Keep Him Alive” comes to the Arden Theatre starting Sept. 12, and Opera Philadelphia kicks off the first of its pick-your-price performances on Sept. 25 with “The Listeners.”
